Alpine to Introduce “New Front Wing” and Weight Reduction Update at Japanese GP

In response to their dismal position in the 2024 season, Alpine need to introduce dramatic updates to move up the order. The first step in this process will be arriving at the Japanese Grand Prix.

Primarily, these updates will focus on weight reduction, but there are also aerodynamic refinements. All of this is going to be needed if they want to even score a point this year.

Team principal, Bruno Famin, said these “are not major” but it “is important for us to add these elements as soon as we can so we can assess the potential and continually improve our understanding of our package.

“These updates mainly concern a new front wing as well as the first step of weight reduction.”

Alpine’s fortunes did improve slightly in Australia with Esteban Ocon able to make the team’s first Q2 appearance. This is something Famin acknowledges but thinks it “was likely down to circumstance and track specifics rather than an improvement in performance.”

Ocon was feeling positive about their performance in Australia, but if he didn’t have to pit and remove a tear-off visor in the brake duct, he might have finished higher than P16, maybe even within the points scoring positions.

“There were promising signs with the car showing better performance across the weekend as a whole and being closer to the teams around us,” Ocon said. “[But] it felt like a bit of a missed opportunity as, without the extra pit stop to remove the tear-off from the rear brake duct, we could have been in the mix for points.”
