Carlos Sainz Rumoured Negotiations with Mercedes in Saudi Arabia

Carlos Sainz might not have been able to race in the recent Saudi Arabian Grand Prix, but that doesn’t mean that he wasn’t busy. The entire Sainz team was spotted spending a significant amount of time in the Mercedes hospitality venue, suggesting discussions are taking place for a 2025 seat.

It is alleged by Italian publication, Corriere dello Sport, that Sainz had begun negotiations with Mercedes boss, Toto Wolff, to replace the outgoing Lewis Hamilton.

“During the Saudi Arabian GP,” the Italian publication wrote, “the entire entourage of Carlos Sainz remained in the Mercedes hospitality for a long time.

“Sainz Jr’s contract with Ferrari expires at the end of the season, and for this reason his manager, Carlo Ontorio, together with the driver’s father, Carlos Sainz Sr, spoke at length with Toto Wolff.

“The negotiations have begun.”

Carlos Jr, for his part, downplayed his father’s chats with team bosses.

“If you saw my dad went to say hello to Helmut Marko you need to remember he has a great relationship with him in the same way we have a good relationship with Toto,” he said.

“With everyone in the grid it is normal at this stage of the year. But also, we haven’t seen each other for three or four months or so you’re going say hello to each other.”

While he played coy at which teams he had been speaking to, he has labelled what he is looking for in a new team.

“[I am] looking for a project first that allows me to win and be performing as soon as possible,” he told media in Bahrain.

“But also for sure looking at stability and how important stability is in a project in the medium to long term. To build a strong team and a team to understand the driver and the driver to understand the team.

“So with those two things in mind and those two things that you need to put into the equation, I will take my decision, taking my time accordingly.”

With that criterion in mind, there are only so many options for Sainz. Chief among these would be Red Bull and Mercedes, though Aston Martin cannot be discounted. Mercedes and Aston Martin are both short to medium term projects that could see Sainz towards the front of the grid, while he may be hesitant to join Red Bull so as to not play second fiddle to Max Verstappen.
