Baume & Mercier Unveils Artistic Marvel: The Hampton Polyptyque Edition – Musée Soulages 10th Anniversary Limited Edition

Inspired by the renowned artist Pierre Soulages, Baume & Mercier continues its journey of translating the intricate details of Soulages' paintings onto watch dials....

In the ever-evolving world of horology, Baume & Mercier has once again captured the essence of artistic mastery with the release of the Hampton Polyptyque Edition – Musée Soulages 10th Anniversary Limited Edition. Building on the success of its predecessor, the “Hommage à Pierre Soulages” Limited Edition, this latest timepiece stands as a testament to the brand’s commitment to merging art and craftsmanship.

Inspired by the renowned artist Pierre Soulages, Baume & Mercier continues its journey of translating the intricate details of Soulages’ paintings onto watch dials. The canvas for this reinterpretation remains the Hampton, a rectangular case that provides the perfect stage for showcasing the vivid hues and textures inspired by Soulages’ Peinture 324 x 362 cm, 1986, Polyptyque I Edition. The DLC-coated steel case, reminiscent of the first edition, creates a seamless, monochromatic aesthetic that emphasizes the stealthy allure of the timepiece.

The black dial, a nod to Soulages’ penchant for working in the dark shades during the era of the featured painting, becomes a work of art itself. The varying directions of lines and textures imbue the dial with depth, revealing shades of darkness that play differently in the light. Rose gold accents punctuate the dial sparingly, providing not only aesthetic appeal but also ensuring the legibility of essential elements, including the brand name and “Swiss Made” text.

While the design framework and color codes echo its predecessor, the sequel introduces subtle yet impactful changes. The hands’ rounded 18k rose gold tips, a thoughtful touch conceived by Pierre Soulages before his passing in 2022, add a distinctive flair to the timepiece. The use of a different Soulages’ work as inspiration for the dial’s texture further distinguishes this edition.

Inside the watch ticks an exhibited ETA 2892 automatic movement with a blackened rotor, a reliable powerhouse that complements the artistry on display. The package is completed with an interchangeable black, “non-animals” strap, offering versatility to the overall aesthetic.

The limited edition nature of the Baume & Mercier Hampton Polyptyque Edition – Musée Soulages 10th Anniversary, with only 328 pieces available, adds an exclusive allure. Priced at US$6,900, some may raise an eyebrow at an ETA-driven watch in this range, but the intricate dial work and meticulous craftsmanship justify the cost.
