Picture this: it’s the 1980s and the bigwigs at Swatch have to decide if they want to launch their smash hit watch with a square or circle case. It probably wasn’t the most exciting chat and we know they went with the safer bet and the rest is history. But Swatch have decided to ask themselves, “What if?” Thus the Swatch What If? was born.
This release takes the original 80s design and, well, makes it square. Though they have used bioceramic material for the case, the same material used on the Moonswatch.

Being a square, the case is 33mm x 33mm and is available in four colours; blue, black, green, and beige. The best part is that each of these aren’t simple colour options, but arrive with different dial layouts.
The black case model is the simplest, with a white dial and stick markers. The grey has roman numeral markers, while the beige model has a blue dial with Arabic numerals on three, six, and nine o’clock. Finally, the green model features a very minimalistic dial design similar to the black model.
All the models have a day-date display and a luminescent handset. There’s also a new integrated strap system while many of the components are biosourced including the strap and the edge-to-edge glass.
Perhaps the best part of the whole thing is the $165 AUD ($110 USD) price tag. These aren’t a limited edition release like the Moonswatch and will be available on Swatch’s website from August 1st.
