The Meta Gala is a place for celebrities to dress up in their very best according to a theme, this year’s being “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty.” The Met Gala 2023 will look at “the designer’s stylistic vocabulary as expressed in aesthetic themes that appear time and again in his fashions from the 1950s to his final collection in 2019.”
So who did it best and who did it the worst? (Spoilers, there were way more winners than losers this year).
Winner: Anne Hathaway
The texture, the cut, the safety pins *chef’s kiss*. Anne looks effortlessly glamourous here.
Loser: Billie Eilish
A rare miss for Billie Eilish. It isn’t the worst outfit at the Met Gala, not by a long shot, but because of the high standards she herself has set, she has been judged harsher and this isn’t her best.
Winner: Jenna Ortega
Far out this is awesome. Ortega talked about how she can’t seem to drop Wednesday Addams’ style ethos, but on this occassion it’s absolutely working for her.
Winner: Emma Chamberlain
Let’s do Jackie Kennedy but add some Vivienne Westwood flavour. A great outfit even if it isn’t the most glamourous we’ve seen at this year’s Met Gala.
Winner/Loser: Doja Cat
On one hand, the dress stunning. On the other, the cat face is certainly a choice. Is it fashion or is this a dress rehearsal for Cats? Sure, it’s an homage to Lagerfeld’s cat, Choupette, but we’re veering into movie effects makeup here.
Winner: Nicole Kidman
Few people pull off glam like Nicole Kidman. Just look at Keith Urban, that’s a perfect encapsulation of the rest of us gazing upon this beautiful dress.
Winner/Loser: Lil Nas X
Lil Nas X looks amazing and that makeup would have taken ages to do, but there’s barely an outfit here. It is a winner for creativity, but it is a loser for it’s lack of anything past the makeup.
Loser: Kate Moss
This is just slouchy and gives off a somewaht unkempt look. Not sure if glam heroin chic is still in Kate.
Loser: Jared Leto
Jared Leto looks like the discount version of Jon Snow and I actually think the cat costume was better. At least that hid this outfit.
Loser: Pedro Pascal
We love you Pedro, but those damn shorts, get rid of them. Other than that, this outfit is actually pretty suave.
Winner: Naomi Campbell
Naomi Campbell looks statuesque here and absolutely stunning. It’s a perfectly fitted look.
Winner: Kylie Jenner
Alright Kylie, well played. Last year’s outfit was a tragedy but she has truly redeemed herself this year.
Loser: Emily Ratajkowski
This dress is spilt in half and on their own, each half would look amazing. The issue is the it looks like it’s cutting off Emily’s legs here. The top half is absolutely stunning though.
Winner: Cardi B
Taking Karl’s signature look at making it her own, absolutely brilliant.
Winner: Glenn Close
Glenn Close kills at almost every event she attends and this time is no different.
Winner: Baz Luhrmann & Catherine Martin
Now this is taking the Karl Lagerfeld theme literally by taking inspiration from the man himself rather than his work. They look fantastic, particularly Luhrmann.
Winner: Jordan Roth
Haute Couture done in sublime fashion. Jordan Roth looks elegant, refined, and above all, glamourous.
Loser: Sydney Sweeney
Does anyone else think her bottom half looks like the Tasmanian Devil when he’s spinning? Just me?
Winner: Gisele Bündchen
Simply angelic. Is that too simple a description?
Winner: Anok Yai
This mermaids hips don’t lie. What an amazing look that takes the mermaid/fish motif without looking like a costume.
Winner: Conan Gray
This is opulent, extravagant, and divine.
Loser: Karen Elson
This might be a controversial opinion, but this just isn’t working for me. The flowers are too much around the hips, though the train is delightful. This one is difficult to put into words as to why this isn’t working, but there’s something about the silhouette that feels off.
Winner: Sean "Diddy" Combs
That cape, that jacket, he could be the Phantom of the Opera without the deformity.
Winner: Taika Waititi
The coat and pants are to die for, but I question the decision to go without a shirt. Still, Taika is able to pull it off.
Loser: Ashely Graham
She looks like three planet solar system with Saturn around the shoulders, Earth at the hips, and Jupiter at her feet.
Winner: Amanda Seyfried
Disco never died for Amanda and we’re so glad that’s the case.
Loser: Pusha T
The cut is all wrong and the asymmetrical pattern placement really hamper the look. The shoes are amazing though.
Loser: Christina Ricci
This dress isn’t doing Christina any favours. The materials looks like a bed covering, not to mention it fits her like a pillow case.
Winner: Lily James
This black leather gown is all sorts of goth glamour that I’m absolutely here for.
Loser: Cara Delevingne
Cara looks like a Japanese samurai or dojo master with a punk rock haircut.
Winner: Manu Rios
Understated yet incredibly suave. Very well done.
Loser: Jack Harlow
It’s a bit boring isn’t it? Not really sure how the theme is being portrayed here either.
Winner: Ava Max
Just wow. This is one of the most glamourous and beautiful outfits here tonight. Very Russian princess.
