Following the announcement that Henry Cavill has returned as the Man of Steel, Dwayne Johnson has taken to Twitter to congratulate Cavill, saying that he “fought for years” to bring him back to the role.
For the past few months, rumours have been swirling that Cavill would join Johnson for Black Adam, and with the release of the film, fans were graced with Superman’s return in the end credits.
“We fought for years to bring you back,” Johnson said. “They always said no. But for [producers] Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia & myself, ‘no’ was never an option.
“We can’t intelligently & strategically build out our DC Universe without the greatest superhero of all time. Because for us, the fans will always come first.
“As wild as it sounds, I learned that ‘fans first’ philosophy back when I wrestling in flea markets for $40 bucks a match well before the bright lights of WWE. Welcome home, Superman. I’ll see you down the road….”

But to @DanyGarciaCo @hhgarcia41 & myself no” was not an option.

Cavill dropped the bombshell with an Instagram post following Black Adam’s opening weekend, taking the time to thank fans for their continued support over the years. His most recent appearance as Kal-El was 2021’s Snyder Cut for Justice League, but he hasn’t worn the suit since the original 2017 film.
“I wanted to make it official: I am back as Superman… Thank you for your support and thank you for your patience. I promise it will be rewarded.”
Little is known about what Superman’s next appearance will look like, but it is likely that we will get a standalone film within the next few years. Alongside this, Johnson has frequently made it known during the Black Adam rollout that he wants Black Adam and Superman to clash.
After Cavill declared his return, he spoke publicly about the role on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, giving valuable insight into what’s been happening behind the scenes for the character.
Cavill said the plan for him to reprise the role has been in the works for a while: he was asked to appear in Black Adam when he was filming season 2 of Netflix’s The Witcher series. During this time, he had to take a break from filming the show, and was forced to keep the reason for doing so a secret from the production team.
He also explained his reasoning for wearing the iconic Man of Steel suit variant in his Black Adam cameo, and that it was an emotional and nostalgic moment for him.
“I went to Warner Bros.’ studio in the UK and got back in the suit,” Cavill said. “It was a very powerful moment for me. I wasn’t sure how I would feel…whether it would be something very emotionally connective because I put the ‘Man of Steel’ suit back on.
“I chose that one in particular because of the nostalgia attached to the suit. It was important for me to be standing there and enjoying that moment. That is one of the top moments in my career. It feels great to have the opportunity to wear it again.”
After being absent from the DCEU for five years, many fans were worried that Cavill had been removed from the role in favour of a new Superman, but Cavill himself said he never gave up hope: “I told myself I’m gonna let it sit and simmer in the background. I never lost hope, that was the key for me.”
When asked if there was any news regarding his next appearance as Superman, Cavill was tightlipped on the details: “You know I can’t tell you that.” As he said, fans will have to continue to be patient: one day they’ll surely be rewarded.
