Just two weeks after The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power brought viewers back to the fantastical lands of Middle Earth, Amazon continues the unstoppable growth of its streaming empire. Leaving behind swords, elves, and hobbits, Amazon has set its sights on the gritty, neon-soaked universe of Blade Runner.
The streaming giant has officially ordered Alcon Entertainment to create 10 episodes for Blade Runner 2099, a live action sequel series that will continue the story established in Ridley Scott’s 1982 Blade Runner, and Denis Villeneuve’s 2017 sequel, Blade Runner 2049.
2099 was first announced by Ridley Scott in November of 2021, and development was confirmed in February. Now, Amazon has given the project the greenlight for full steam ahead.
Blade Runner fans will be disappointed to know that exact plot details are sparse at the moment, but based on the title, we can assume the show will take place 50 years after 2049. Considering the time jump, it’s unlikely we’ll see Harrison Ford reprise his role as legendary Blade Runner Rick Deckard, but we might get Ryan Gosling back as K/Joe.
In terms of who’s at the helm for the show, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. Ridley Scott is executive producing, and fans should feel relieved that he’s there to preserve his vision for the Blade Runner story. Working alongside him is Michael Green, co-writer for 2049, which had a great narrative that was existential and thought-provoking.
However, the showrunner for the series is Silka Luisa, who was the executive producer for Paramount’s Halo series that was released earlier this year. The show received mixed reviews, and was especially loathed by fans of the original games, so 2099 may be in trouble.
Though no release date has been provided, and we know little about what the future holds for 2099, the head of global television for Amazon Studios, Vernon Sanders, is optimistic about the series.
“The original ‘Blade Runner,’ directed by Ridley Scott, is considered one of the greatest and most influential science-fiction movies of all time, and we’re excited to introduce ‘Blade Runner 2099’ to our global Prime Video customers,” he said.
“We are honoured to be able to present this continuation of the ‘Blade Runner’ franchise, and are confident that by teaming up with Ridley, Alcon Entertainment, Scott Free Productions, and the remarkably talented Silka Luisa, ‘Blade Runner 2099’ will uphold the intellect, themes, and spirit of its film predecessors.”
