James Buckley who became famous for his portrayal of Jay Cartwright in The Inbetweeners, has continued his career in an unexpected way. Buckley has become the first person to earn $1 million USD on the fan engagement platform Cameo.
Cameo, for those unaware, is a platform that allows users to pay participating celebrities to create personalised videos. For example, you could theoretically pay Buckley to sing “Happy Birthday” for you.
For everyone involved on the platform, Buckley has made the most (probably repeating Inbetweeners quotes for fans).
Martin Blencowe, Cameo’s co-founder, explains Buckley’s success: “James was incredibly popular from the start, but he’s stay committed to his fans, always keeping an accessible price (even during his busiest periods) and giving his all to make Cameo special.
“In return, he’s gained the financial freedom and overwhelming fan support to pursue the projects he’s most passionate about like 2:22 – A Ghost Story, the West End play I was fortunate enough to see him and Tom star in, and his family’s YouTube channel, At Home With The Buckleys.”

This is the closest you can get to new Inbetweeners content as Buckley recently told The Chris Moyles Show that there is no chance he will return to his role when asked if the writers asked him to: “I’d say no. Not because I don’t think I would have an amazing time doing it, because I know I would. I love the boys, I love the writers. Doing The Inbetweeners was the best job in the world.
“All we did was muck around all day long and they filmed us doing it, and at the end of the day, we might have had an episode, or a TV [show], you know, or a film or something. It was the best job in the world. But you know, as I’m getting older, it’s looking like it might be the only thing that I do professionally that is universally loved. There’s not enough money in the world for me to spoil that.”
Buckley’s castmate, Simon Bird, who play Will in the show, had similar sentiments. He told The Guardian that “It’s a hard no, I’m afraid. It just wouldn’t be the show people want or remember. Much better to leave it as a happy memory.”
Though he did jokingly add: “Cut to us all doing a third film for Netflix next year… anything’s possible.”
