Do you like The Sopranos? What about Boardwalk Empire? Yellowstone? Sylvester Stallone? What if there was a new series that had ties with all those things? Introducing Tulsa King.
Tulsa King is created by Taylor Sheridan, co-creator of Yellowstone and writer of Sicario. It stars Sylvester Stallone as a New York City mobster, Dwight “The General” Manfredi. Manfredi has been released from prison and sent to Tulsa, Oklahoma to create a new crew.
Not only have they got the creator of one of the most popular shows in recent memory, but they also have writer Terence Winter as the showrunner. Winter was a producer and writer on The Sopranos and Boardwalk Empire. To add some extra credibility into the mix, he also wrote the screenplay for The Wolf of Wall Street. He’s no joke, the guy knows how to write about organised crime.
Sheridan has been tasked by Paramount+ to create a whole slew of new projects for the burgeoning streaming platform and he can thank the success of Yellowstone for giving the studio confidence in his abilities.
In a behind the scenes featurette (that has been strangely region locked so Australian readers get your VPNs ready) we get a little commentary from the creators. Tulsa King will offer a “fresh look” at the mob genre as it will blend genre elements from westerns. Stallone’s character is a fish-out-of-water type in Tulsa having been born and bred in New York.
Stallone himself has made large contributions to the show not only as an actor, but as a writer and director. He says that Tulsa King is “soulful, insightful, and relatable” and will finally give him the opportunity to show a different side of himself.
The cast alongside Stallone includes Dana Delaney (Desperate Housewives), Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy), Anna Sciorra (The Sopranos), Martin Starr (Silicon Valley), and Max Casella (The Sopranos) among others.
Given the amount of talent on this show, it’s hard to say that this will not at least be interesting. Not only do they have the talent, but they have an interesting take on the genre, something that is sorely needed given the plethora of mobster films and TV shows already in existence.
Filming began in March 2022 on location in Tulsa and is set to debut on November 13 on Paramount+.
