Seth Rogen’s animated version of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles finally has a title just a year before its release. Presented in a fun toxic ooze-inspired graphic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is here, and it looks like it might take inspiration from the original cartoon. At least, that’s what the logo seems to imply.
This definitely isn’t much like the Michael Bay produced live-action TMNT films. How can that be assumed? A mural has appeared that takes inspiration from the classic cartoon rather than the Bay produced films with phrases like “Heroes in a Halfshell” and “Turtles Rule!” It’s just slightly different from the gritty and “realistic” (for lack of a better word) films we saw from Bay.
Interestingly, Mutant Mayhem started as a follow-up to those Bay produced films. Rogen and Point Grey Pictures picked up the film in 2018 and made it a CGI animated feature instead of live action. Given that most of the Turtles’ franchise has been animated (or drawn in the case of the comics) it makes sense for a return to the form. Looking at the title alone, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the translation to live-action is difficult to pull off whereas animation can take full advantage of the conceptual silliness of the franchise.
This will be the first Turtles movie since 2016’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. The film was a box office disappointment for Paramount which caught producers, Andrew Form and Brad Fuller, off-guard telling Collider that “it just didn’t find an audience. We really don’t know why.”
“As a lifelong fan of Ninja Turtles, weirdly the ‘Teenage’ part of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was always the part that stuck out to me the most. And as someone who loves teenage movies, and who’s made a lot of teenage movies, and who literally got their start in their entire profession by writing a teenage movie, the idea of kind of honing in on that element was really exciting to us.”
Rogen’s partner at Point Grey, Evan Goldberg, whose also producing The Boys is producing this alongside James Weaver and Rogen himself. Jeff Rowe, who wrote on Gravity Falls and Disenchantment, will direct this film after his very well received directing debut on The Mitchells vs. The Machines. It’s safe to say that Rowe knows animation. Rowe did not write this film, that honour goes to Brendan O’Brian (Bad Neighbours, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates).
