Long live the King, baby!
On its debut weekend, Elvis has managed to take the number one spot at the U.S. box office from Top Gun: Maverick.
However, it was a narrow victory with just $1 million USD separating the two films.
According to Variety, the two films were very close all weekend. Elvis took the No. 1 spot on Friday but lost out on Saturday to Top Gun. By Sunday though, the films had tied for first.
Elvis generated $31.1 million from 3,906 cinemas in its debut. Top Gun: Maverick earned $29.6 million during its fifth weekend in cinemas. That’s an impressive feat from Top Gun.
This opening bodes well for Elvis, considering that it isn’t a family friendly film but an adult-skewed drama. Typically, this demographic does not rush out to see movies on opening weekend – this isn’t a Marvel film.
Top Gun is barely showing signs of slowing down after reaching to coveted $1 billion mark. This is unprecedented for a film that has been out for over a month. It’s also the first time one of Tom Cruise’s films has surpassed the billion-dollar mark.
Top Gun: Maverick is the first movie this year to reach $1 billion. It’s also only the second to do so during the pandemic, following Spider-Man: No Way Home ($1.9 billion).
