TAG Heuer have shown off a brilliantly sporty collection at Watches and Wonders 2022 for both the land and sea.
TAG Heuer are no strangers to sports watches, it’s practically their bread and butter, and at Watches and Wonders 2022 they played to their strengths. Racing, a big part of TAG Heuer’s identity, is at the forefront here from the new Carrera’s to the Monaco. Let’s take a look.
The Carrera Collection
Designed for professional drivers and sports-car enthusiasts. The Carrera in general is a perfect intermingling of aesthetics and functionality. Of the two Carrera’s introduced one is a collaboration with Porsche and it looks very similar to the Ayrton Senna collaboration from earlier this year, so that’s a little disappointing. However, the Plasma Diamant D’Avant Garde is very interesting.
The Plasma uses lab-grown diamonds in what has been described as a “major milestone in the over 160-year-old company history and the watch industry at large.” It’s a new way of mastering design thanks to the versatility of lab-grown diamonds. It’s very cool, undoubtedly.
The Aquaracer Collection
Designed for men and women who love outdoor sports and exploration in nature, the Aquaracers are versatile and high-performing watches that are a beauty to behold. Three different versions were announced: the Professional 1000 Superdiver, Professional 300 Orange Diver, and the Professional 200 Solargraph.
All three are absolutely beautiful watches. Which is the best? I think it hardly matters in this case. Each watch features the traditional Aquaracer design codes: a uni-directional rotating bezel, screw-down crown, 200m water resistance, luminous markings, sapphire crystal, and a double safety clasp.
The Monaco Gulf Special Edition
Far out is this an amazing looking watch. This co-creation with Gulf showcases the legendary colours and design of the Gulf brand and comes equipped with the in-house Heuer 02 movement – a first for the Monaco. This watch speaks for itself, I don’t need to prattle on about it.
The Connected Collection
TAG Heuer have hit a specific niche with this one that might be sacrilegious to some purists and that is luxury smartwatches. It makes business sense given that smartwatches are currently far more popular than traditional watches. Aesthetically, it looks similar to a Samsung Watch, at least the 42mm dress watch version does. There’s also a larger 45mm model that’s been redesigned for a sportier look. Love or hate these, they aren’t poorly designed and worthy additions to the TAG Heuer brand.
Formula 1 Red Bull Racing Edition
TAG Heuer have been a part of Formula 1 since 1968 and they don’t plan on stopping that now. Given their current partnership with Red Bull Racing, it comes as no surprise that this is how they’ve decided to celebrate. How you feel about this watch will likely line-up with how you feel about Red Bull’s livery. I personally dislike their colour choices but that doesn’t mean I’m the majority opinion here. Regardless of my personal tastes it is a solid homage to the team.
