It’s a good year for Lord of the Rings fans as the Tolkien Estate has released the author’s never before seen drawings.

So much new content in Middle Earth this year with Amazon’s The Rings of Power coming out and now this crazy little bit of enthusiast content. Thanks to the Tolkien Estate, the official caretakers of Tolkien’s work, unveiled a new website that showcases unseen drawings, sketches, maps, and illustrations.

J.R.R Tolkien was a real renaissance man. Not only did he write one of the greatest works of fantasy, but he was also an accomplished artist and linguist. He was a professor of Old and Middle English as well as Old Norse at the University of Oxford.

Tolkien’s art and writings worked in tandem. Illustrations were part of his process. Sometimes words would inspire the art, and sometimes after drawing a scene Tolkien would then move the narrative in another direction after inspiration struck.

A lot of the maps relate to Middle Earth, obviously. This wasn’t just to be pretty either, Tolkien used maps to ensure that his characters were moving through the world accurately. This would all add to the incredible world building of Middle Earth to really make it feel like a real place.

Included in the new artworks are a number of illustrations created for The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion. But there are things unrelated to Middle Earth, like drawings he had made for his children, landscapes he drew from life, and imagined abstractions. All of the artworks come with a detailed description.
