The failed dream that was the DeLorean DMC-12 is trying to make yet another comeback, but will this one stick?
It’s funny that a car that was such a catastrophic failure when it was released is generating such hype again forty years after its initial release. Yes, it has stayed popular and iconic thanks to the Back to the Future trilogy – which came out three years after the car company went bust! But the car was absolutely terrible when it came out! It was only chosen for the films because it looked futuristic at the time.
The initial release may have been a failure but now the DeLorean Motor Company is under new management and maybe this is the time the brand will succeed at a proper comeback.
A modern day take on the DMC-12 is coming – the DeLorean EVolved. As you might have been able to guess from the name, it will have an electric drivetrain.
Interestingly, the car will have a focus on the luxury market based on the hashtags accompanying company’s announcement on Twitter.
The Future was never promised. Reimagine today.

This isn’t the first time that the DeLorean’s comeback has been teased. Last year, design house Italdesign showed a very similar image to the one shared this year. This suggests, according to Autocar, that they are likely collaborating with the DeLorean Motor Company on the project.
Who are Italdesign? A design house founded by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the man who designed the original DeLorean’s stainless-steel body.
If Italdesign is involved, a question must be asked – will this be a throwback car or a step forward? The original windscreen shape, gullwing doors, and long bonnet are all still there, but the grille has been switched up as have the headlights. But it doesn’t seem likely that it will simply be a repeat given the electric drivetrain.
For that powertrain, it has been rumoured that it will be supplied by British company Williams Advanced Engineering as Italdesign have recently signed a partnership together. That partnership will see the two collaborate on an open-source EV platform. It isn’t clear whether this partnership will have anything to do with the DeLorean.
