When A$AP Rocky showed up to the Met Gala in cape that strongly resembled a quilt, many joked that it was a random quilt bought in a thrift store. That turned out to be true but now it’s no longer a random quilt, but a quilt with a moderately interesting story.

ERL designer, Eli Russell Linnetz, discovered the quilt in a California thrift store and used it to create A$AP Rocky’s outfit. It was just a quilt found in an op shop but now the family who donated the blanket have come out to tell the story of the quilt.

It all comes from a woman named Sarah who posted on social media a side-by-side of A$AP Rocky and the quilt laying on a bed at her home. The caption went as follows, “So my great grandmothers quilt was donated to an antique/thrift store a while back. When I saw the #metgala Photo I realized instantly that it had to be the same quilt.”

Sarah continued to explain, “I read the Vogue article about the designer finding the quilt in Southern California and with his office not that far from us in Venice, California, I demanded that my mom go look for the photos of it on our old bed.”

Linnetz did confirm this to Vogue that this is indeed where he found the quilt and added things himself to greater encapsulate the Met Gala’s theme, “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion.”

Linnetz elaborated and said that it wasn’t as easy as just grabbing a vintage quilt and calling it a day. “I quilted on things that were important to me, from my dad’s bathrobe to my boxers,” Linnetz told Vogue. “Then we used these amazing plaids and flannels and embroidered my family’s name all over the quilt.”

Sarah did share another post that clarified her stance on the situation,

“I posted this because I found it amazing that some thing that my great grandmother made out of love for my mother, to be used to keep her warm, and was donated so that it might keep somebody else warm or sold to raise funds for a lovely charity, ended up being used for an amazing statement art piece by amazingly talented people who took it to the next level.”

Sarah also clarified that her family still has plenty of mementos from her great grandmother, “And to everyone who is concerned that we gave away this quilt, please don’t be worried we still have many quilts and afghans and handmade lovey’s that she left behind for us.”
