The series on August 2nd has officially wrapped production and as a result Amazon have given fans a teaser image and a premiere date of September 2, 2022.
The show still doesn’t have a title, but weekly episodes will appear on Prime Video on September 2, 2022, in over 240 countries and territories.
Production wrapped in New Zealand on August 2nd and so Amazon Studios gave us our very first look at the show with a teaser image. The image shows a vast landscape in the traditional epic scale often associated with fantasy and a beautiful city at the centre. This city may likely be the very powerful Numenorean City of the Kings (Armenelos) or possibly the Elven city Ost-in-Edhil, where Sauron tricked the Elven smiths to forge the Rings of Power.
This is all conjecture but considering the series takes place in Tolkien’s “Second Age”, thousands of years before the events of The Lord of the Rings, it is possible that the city in the image could be either city. Given the architecture it may be more likely to be an Elven city especially as the woman in the image looks a little like Galadriel.
The fall of Numenor and rise of Sauron are major events that occurred during the Second Age and will likely be the focus of the series. But this is just a guess.
According to a release, the series will “follow an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they confront the long-feared re-emergence of evil to Middle-earth.” This re-emergence of evil will undoubtedly be Sauron as the Second Age ends with the Last Alliance of Elves and Men seen in the prologue of Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring.
This is not a bad thing either, the fall of Numenor is a brilliant tale which coincides perfectly with Sauron’s rise to power. If this is what the series will focus on then it will reach epic scales we may not have seen before.
