LA-based Legende Automobiles have dubbed the restomodded car the Turbo 3 and it’s a time-travelling throwback to the 1980s when the Renault 5 Turbo 2 was one of the hottest hatchbacks.
What Legende have done is take a Renault 5 Turbo 2 and remove any of the cost cutting measures that Renault implemented in the 80s to make the car affordable. Plus, they’ve also added some modern conveniences. So basically it performs as if price were no issue.
Legende Automobiles said of the car, “In a world that has become increasingly more digital, we were yearning for a time-machine that could transport us back to the analogue 80s.”
So, they went with the Renault because restomodding a DeLorean would be a little too on the nose.
“Technology has given us many great things, but it has also taken away the tactile experience that we, as car nuts, are missing in today’s driving,” continues Legende. “Sequential transmissions with paddle shifters have their place, but for this machine, we wanted an old-school mechanical shifter to give the driver full control of the turbo-powered engine.”
According to Top Gear, the source of the engine is unspecified, but they have been told that it makes 400 horsepower which is easily more than twice the power of the original Renault 5.
The bodywork is mostly carbon fibre and they had to make it wider in order to fit the larger wheels.
Legende have stated that they “only [use] technology to improve electrics or materials.” This remains true here with the Turbo 3 as the additions include climate control and digital dials. Just things that make life that little bit easier while not distracting from the car itself.
The Turbo 3 really does look like a time machine, if a time machine were made from a rally car. It does commit to the 80s aesthetic and succeeds in pulling it off. It looks like a car from Cyberpunk or some variation of that.
The price has not yet been revealed but will likely be very expensive but it could be expected for these things to sell like hotcakes.
