Space Jam (1996) director, Joe Pytka, had a few things to say about the new Space Jam: A New Legacy film in an interview with TMZ.

Pytka had very few nice things to say about the new Space Jam. He said it was so boring, he couldn’t finish it in one sitting. Apparently, it took five separate sessions to watch a two-hour movie.

He takes aim at LeBron. According to Pytka, he’s a great athlete and good actor but “the truth is that LeBron [James] ain’t Michael [Jordan].” He goes on to point out that Michael Jordan wasn’t just the best basketball player at the time, he was the most famous person in the world.

He continues to criticise the film for not using LeBron’s personal life as part of the film’s plot as he had done with Jordan in the original film. He also thinks his soundtrack is better. Not surprising considering Pytka’s background directing music videos in the 80’s and 90’s.

Pytka not only seems to hate everything about the new film, but especially hates what they’ve done with Bugs Bunny. He said Bugs has absolutely no connection to any previous depictions of the character, something Pytka says that his film concentrated on. The new version he said “looked like one of those fluffy dolls you buy at an airport gift shop to bring your kid when your business trip has taken too long.”

It doesn’t seem like audiences agree with him however, as the new film has pushed Marvel’s Black Widow from the top spot at the box office and holds an 87% approval rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. However, it has been panned by critics holding a 31% approval rating.

Pytka does acknowledge that his film was also panned by critics and was still loved by many. He closes out by saying that he isn’t angry about the new Space Jam but he does think it sucks. Looks like another classic in the making.
