This one-of-a-kind car has been described as automotive haute couture and after two years it’s finally arrived, the Bugatti “La Voiture Noire.”
Two years ago, Bugatti unveiled the Voiture Noire at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show and it immediately got people talking. Other than the US $18.68 million price tag, people were taken with the art deco design that was inspired by Bugatti’s classic Type 57SC Atlantic.
Car enthusiasts love the Type 57SC. It’s one of the most coveted classic cars in the world. The Type 57SC was designed in 1934 by Jean Bugatti and only four of them were ever made. One of the four was lost during World War II and if someone managed to find it today, it would be worth over $100 million.
While the Type 57SC was exclusive, the Voiture Noire takes it further. Exclusive isn’t an adequate word to describe the Voiture Noire, there’s only one, and it was made to order. Bugatti’s design director, Achim Anscheidt said,
“We produced a true one-off, a single unit car that we call automotive haute couture. It’s not just a car anymore, it’s really more like a piece of art in line with the exclusive fashion and luxury brands in France.”
The buyer gets to brag about being so wealthy that he owns the most expensive car in the world. But this isn’t anything that new for Bugatti as they’ve been making one-of-a-kind and custom cars for ridiculously rich clients for over 100 years! Bugatti have stated that the average Bugatti client owns about 42 vehicles, five homes, three private jets, three helicopters, and a yacht.
The Voiture Noire is powered by an 8.0 litre, 16-cylinder quad-turbo engine. This engine can produce 1,500 horsepower that can take the car from 0-60 mph in just 2.5 seconds for a top speed of 261 mph (420 km/h).
Top speed isn’t the cars focus. Much like Bugatti’s previous limited-run model, the Divo, a greater focus has been given to touring refinement. Tim Bravo, a Bugatti spokesperson said, “High-speed mode was not relevant for these cars because they had a much different focus. The Divo is made for corners and La Voiture Noire is a Grand Turismo.”
No one except Bugatti know who the buyer is but there has been speculation that could be anyone from Cristiano Ronaldo or, more likely, former VW Group chairman, Ferdinand Piech. It seems likely that we may never know who bought it. Tim Bravo also stated that,
“As soon as a customer makes a public claim, then we can refer to that, but other than that we will honor a customer’s anonymity and he will decide whether or not he wants to remain anonymous.”
So, all we know is that they are a ‘he’. But if that doesn’t satisfy your curiosity maybe the buyer will reveal himself at the release of the car on May 31st.
